Thrangu Tara Abbey is a Buddhist nunnery established in 1991 by the Very Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. It is located in Swayambunath on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal. Born in Tibet in 1933, Thrangu Rinpoche is a senior teacher of the
Karma Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. In the 1970’s, His Holiness the 16th Karmapa appointed Thrangu Rinpoche as Abbot of Rumtek Monastery, the international seat of the Karmapa and the Karma Kagyu lineage located in Sikkim.Rinpoche was also appointed as the personal tutor to the four primary Regents of the lineage.
In 2001, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appointed Thrangu Rinpoche as the personal tutor of H.H. the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. Thrangu Rinpoche lives in India and Nepal and travels all over the world teaching the Dharma. He is renowned for making complex Buddhist teachings accessible to Western students. Thrangu Rinpoche believes in making available to women the full range of monastic, liturgical, philosophical and meditation training that is available to men. It is a rarity for such rich resources to be made available for both girls and women in parts of South Asia. A secular education, plus a seven-year course of higher Buddhist philosophy, and studies in traditional Tibetan medicine will enable the nuns of Thrangu Tara Abbey to teach men and women in both the East and the West. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this CD set will go to Rinpoche’sHimalayan Children’s Fund,earmarked specifically for the education of the nuns of Thrangu Tara abbey.
